At Serene Escapes we provide IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) laser hair removal. Our Certified Laser Technicians take great pride in offering quality treatment in a safe and comfortable environment.
IPL laser hair removal technology utilizes intense pulsed light to disable cells with the hair follicle and stop the hair from growing back. This unique way of removing unwanted hair is quick, easy and affordable.
We ask that you shave before your appointment; otherwise your hair is shaved prior to the session beginning. Ultrasound gel is applied on the area to be treated and eyeglasses are worn to protect your eyes from the bright flashes of light. The IPL machine emits a beam of pulsed light onto the skin and in a fraction of a second the pulsed light heats up the hair. The hair becomes detached from its follicle and eventually falls out (within two weeks). Then the hair follicle coagulates and is unable to produce a new hair.
Unwanted hair can easily be removed from all parts of the body including the chin, upper lip, bikini line, legs, back and underarms. The only areas that cannot be treated are eyebrows, over tattoos, or moles.
IPL has been clinically proven to be safe and effective on almost all skin and hair types. It allows the practitioner to adjust setting to suit any type of skin and hair combination.
FAQ
What do I have to do before my first laser appointment?
Do not wax, tweeze, sugar, thread or tan prior to laser hair removal for at least 4 weeks
Do not use skin irritants or prescription skin products (Retin A, Renova, Adapalene, Refissa or Glycolic) for at least 3 days prior to laser hair removal and after
Please bring a list of ALL prescription drugs (including supplements) to your first appointment
Do not use photosensitive drugs for 7 days prior to treatment
If you are on hydroquinone, stop it a minimum of 2 weeks prior to treatment
Shave the treatment site on the day of, or the day prior to treatment.
Avoid direct contact with sunlight after appointment
Use sunscreen, minimum SPF 30, during the course of your laser treatments
2. Is it painful?
Depending on the area to be treated, some clients may feel little or no sensation at all. Other clients report a feeling similar to a rubber band being flicked against your skin. If you feel the pain is too intense, settings can always be adjusted to reduce the intensity if needed. Typically after a treatment you may feel a slight warm sensation on the treatment area lasting from a few minutes to a couple of hours; however after most treatments it is normal to feel almost nothing.
3. Can white hair be treated?
Intense Pulsed Light targets the color pigment in the hairs. Because white hair has no pigmentation we are unable to treat white hair. Fair hair can be treated but will require more treatments than dark hair.
4. How many treatments will I need?
We typically recommend a course of 4-8 treatments to treat hairs at all stages of the hair growth cycle, but that can vary depending on the color of your hair, color of you skin, and the location being treated.
5. Why does it take so many treatments?
Your hair is constantly growing in 3 main growth stages:
Hair’s active growth phase is called anagen. During anagen, the hair contains an abundance of melanin and is most affected by light-based treatment.
Catagen is the regression phase when the lower part of the hair stops growing but is not shed, and the follicle is reabsorbed.
Telogen is the resting phase during which the old hair falls in preparation for the development of new hair.
Only hair follicles in the active growth phase (anagen) are affected by IPL treatments. Hair in the catagen stage can remain anchored in their follicles for weeks or months, but their follicles are not affected by IPL. Therefore, these follicles will be treated in a subsequent session when they are in a different part of the growth cycle.
6. Is it really permanent?
IPL laser hair removal will permanently remove the hair that you currently have growing. Maintenance sessions may be necessary from time to time because of new hair growth. New hair growth can often be seen with hormonal changes (pregnancy, menopause), medication (steroids, contraceptive pills), age, stress, or illness
7. OK, I had my first appointment. What do I do now?
Treated areas may be tender, slightly red, or swollen. This usually appears within hours of treatment. If redness or swelling occurs, apply a cold towel for 15 minutes per hour. Reapply as needed. Hydrocortisone (purchased in ointment or cream form) can also be applied to decrease symptoms.
Blisters may occur in sensitive areas such as bikini line or neck. If this occurs, an antibiotic ointment such as Polysporin may be applied twice daily until healed.
Scabbing, crusting or oozing may occur within 1-3 days. Do not pick or remove. Do not shave the area. Apply Vitamin E or Aloe Vera to keep moist.
You may shower the day of your treatment. The area should be washed gently with cool to warm water and mild soap. Pat dry, do not rub.
Avoid hot baths, steam rooms and massages for 1-2 days.
Avoid make-up until the treatment site has healed and the redness subsides.
Avoid direct sun and sun bed tanning for the course of the treatments and for the month following final treatment.
Use sunscreen, minimum SPF 30, daily.
Pigmentation change (hyperpigmentation or hypopigmentation) may occur with dark skin. Changes will normalize within weeks.
You may continue to shave the area as normal during your laser treatment.
